Carl Rove on Democracy

22 Feb

“Should America bring Democracy to the World?  Obviously my answer is “yes.”  …Democratic countries don’t encourage terrorism, harbor terror training camps or encourage the spread of hatred and intolerance.  Democracies are more liklely to be peaceful, and if you’re concerned about the world being at peace, then yo’ve got to be concerned about encouraging the spread of democracy.

In 1900, no country would be considered a democracy by today’s standards.  In 1950, there were 22 democracies; in 1962, 36; in 1974, 40; in 200, 120; and today, Freedom House says that there are 143 partially free or totally free democracies in the world Sixty percent of the world’s population live in a democracy.”
